About Central Texas Veterans Health Care System

Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) operates two VA hospitals located at Temple and Waco, Texas.  It also has a large stand-alone Outpatient Clinic in Austin, and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, Palestine, and Cedar Park, Texas.  A fifth CBOC at Marlin was closed for emergency use during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina in 2005 and has not reopened.  CTVHCS contains one of the newest VA inpatient medical/surgical hospitals, opened in 1998, one of the largest inpatient psychiatric facilities, and one of the few Blind Rehabilitation Centers in the country.  CTVHCS serves 238,349 veterans, covers 35,243 square miles and eight (8) congressional districts in 39 counties.

In FY 2007, CTVHCS had 88,000 veterans enrolled, 829,011 outpatient visits, 7,847 inpatients treated and 10,000 OEF/OIF Veterans enrolled. CTVHCS collaborates with Fort Hood, the largest military base in the world with the biggest troop commitment to OEF/OIF. CTVHCS provides transitional medical services and conducts PTSD and TBI research -- the signature illnesses of this conflict.

CTVHCS has 115 academic faculty appointments and is affiliated with Texas A&M University, College of Medicine; University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston; Austin Medical Educaiton Program and Brazos Family Medicine Residency.
