This year the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formally the American Dietetic Association) has dedicated the month to “Get Your Plate in Shape.” This year we are focusing more on a well balanced and more nutrient dense (foods with more nutrition and fewer calories) approach. The goal is to improve not only our food choices in quantity and quality but also incorporate healthy activities for a more active lifestyle. The dietitians at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) urges consumers to look beyond the myths of nutrition, focus on the facts. “It may seem difficult to figure out the most healthful eating plan, and there are many nutrition myths that people follow as the truth,” says registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Kerry Neville. “It’s important to focus on information that is based on scientific research.”
Sifting through complex food and nutrition research can be complicated. A registered dietitian can translate the science and tailor it into advice that fits an individual consumer’s needs. At the VA, the Dietitians can help the Veteran make healthier food choices as well as manage their diet to combat many different disease processes. Dietitians work at the Temple, Waco and Austin facilities along with providing services to every CTVHCS Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
