Waco VA Mental Health Summit aims to improve partnerships to address Veterans’ needs

The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System invites its community partners to a Mental Health Summit set for Wednesday, September 11, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Waco VA Medical Center, 4800 Memorial Drive in Waco, Texas.

Community collaborations partners, such as, police/fire/EMS personnel, mental health staff, Veteran county service officers, mayors, city council members, judges and any agency representatives who work with Veterans are invited to join us at the summit to discuss ways to engage with VA to enhance the quality of mental health and well-being for Veterans and their families.

“The anniversary of 9/11 is a cue for us as a nation to stop and remember how important mental health care is to treat victims of traumatic events, war, and mental illnesses,”  said Sallie Houser-Hanfelder, Director of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.  “This Mental Health Summit will provide a forum for community partners and our VA staff an opportunity to establish and enhance positive working relationships.  As VA and our community partners come together to address the broad mental health care needs of Veterans, we can develop proactive approaches to help Veterans and their families with mental health needs, especially our newest Veterans returning from Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.”

Examples of specific topics that will be discussed at the summit include mental health interventions, employment opportunities, Veterans access, educational resources, as well as Veterans’ social, family needs and available resources.
