Holiday celebration at Temple VA for homeless and formerly homeless Veterans

December 6, 2010

Temple, TX - For the second year, homeless and formerly homeless Veterans will gather for a Veterans holiday celebration Thursday, December 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Temple VA Medical Center in the domiciliary recreation hall.

Veterans from across Central Texas will join in the celebration sponsored by the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System’s Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program.  The holiday celebration targets many of the Veterans in the HCHV program who are not in contact with their families and may otherwise spend their holiday season alone.  In many cases, the HCHV program is the primary support system and serves as a surrogate family for some of these Veterans.  Formerly homeless Veterans are also invited so they can encourage and give hope to Veterans who are still homeless.

Tim Thacker, a Veterans service officer, is catering the food along with Social Work Service staff at the medical center who are providing the desserts and drinks.

Media are invited to the holiday celebration and will be able to talk with Veterans and the HCHV program staff.  Media interested in covering the event, should call Public Affairs at 254-534-0304.
