Three VA MOVE! participants tell how they lost over 100 pounds
Three VA MOVE! Program participants will share their success stories at the MOVE! Program meeting on Wednesday, January 19, at 8:45 a.m.in the second floor public classroom outside of the Bryan/College Station Community Based Outpatient Clinic located at 1651 Rock Prairie Road, Suite 100, in College Station. Whether or not a New Year's resolution was made, these success stories should help inspire any Veteran who wants to lose weight. A second presentation will be made at 10:30 a.m. in the same location with a third presentation being made at noon within the Bryan/College Station Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
The MOVE! Program is a national weight management program designed by the VA National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (NCP), a part of the Office of Patient Care Services, to help Veterans lose weight, keep it off, and improve their health.
Studies as well as expert opinions indicate that effective treatment of obesity must contain behavior modification, dietary therapy and physical activity. Weight loss of 5-10% has proven to positively influence many health conditions, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, degenerative arthritis, and sleep apnea. MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans has taken these factors into consideration and is a very thorough program.
The Bryan/College Station MOVE!group has been meeting since February 2006. Each class is a Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) MOVE! class with three medical staff present – a doctor, a registered nurse, and a registered dietitian. This group has more than 60 active members. Throughout Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, more than 2,700 Veterans participate in the MOVE! Program. Statistics show that 18% lose 5% of their body weight, but many more stop weight gain.
