Homeless stand down; chili cook off set for Killeen Heights Vet Center

The Killeen Heights Vet Center and Central Texas Veterans Health Care Center are teaming up for the Annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down and Veterans Chili Cook Off set for Friday, Nov. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carl Levin Park in Harker Heights on Millers Crossing at the covered pavilion.
Homeless or at risk of homelessness Veterans can sign up for benefits including housing assistance and will be provided with basic items such as clothing, hygiene items and sleeping bags.
Staff from the Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) Program will be on hand to provide assistance to Veterans for enrollment in the VA health care system and to provide assistance in linking Veterans with medical and mental health services, treatment programs, emergency housing, transitional housing, VA supportive housing, referral for financial assistance, and general support and benefit information.
The Vet Center is looking for interested groups or individuals who want to enter the Chili Cook-off. Interested parties should call (254) 953-7100 to volunteer. All participants will have an opportunity to sample the chili. Judges will evaluate the entries on taste, bite, aroma, and appearance. The judging and tasting takes place at the Carl Levin Park in the covered pavilion from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The park is adjacent to the Vet Center.
The event is free and open to the public. The Vet Center is located at 302 Millers Crossing, Suite 4, in Harker Heights. In case of inclement weather, the stand down and chili cook off will be held at the Vet Center.
