Temple VA offers flu vaccinations at drive-thru and Saturday walk-in clinics

January 7, 2011

VA patients offered to "stomp out the flu" with free flu shots

Veterans who have yet to get their vaccination this flu season will have several easy and convenient opportunities to obtain this free shot at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple: a January 18 drive-thru clinic and two Saturday walk-in clinics set for January 15 and January 29.  Veterans who wish to take advantage of these clinics should already be enrolled in the health care system.

Walk-In Clinics schedules:

Temple: Building 204, waiting area near the piano, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Waco:  Outpatient clinic (Building 4 Basement) Room BA165, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Austin: AOPC lobby, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

This year’s vaccination will protect against the strains A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus, A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus; and B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus.  Flu viruses are constantly changing, so the vaccine is updated each year based on which influenza viruses are making people sick, how those viruses are spreading, and how well the previous season’s vaccine protects against those viruses.

The seasonal flu vaccine will be available through March 31, 2016.

Veterans are encouraged to call the Flu Vaccination Hotline at 1-866-613-1482 to report receiving the flu vaccine elsewhere or to receive the most recent flu vaccine information from Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.  The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System’s Temple campus (Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center) is located at 1901 Veterans Memorial Drive in Temple.
