Central Texas Veterans Health Care System
Outpatient Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Programs
All VAs can treat PTSD, but VA has established nationwide PTSD Clinic Teams (PCT). A PCT is a mental health clinic that specializes in the treatment ofcombat-related PTSD. Central Texas is proud to offer three PCTs, one each in Austin, Temple, and Waco. A Veteran is usually enrolled in the program at the facility nearest to him or her.
Treatment typically starts with psychoeducation groups that provide skills to cope with sleep problems, strategies for managing anxiety and irritability, and tips for improving relationships with family and friends. The PCTs specialize in offering Evidence Based Therapies (EBTs) such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) which are two of the gold standard treatments for PTSD. Each veteran's particular treatment plan will vary, of course, depending on that veteran's needs and preferences.
Outpatient treatment for PTSD is also available at VA Vet Centers. To locate a Vet Center nearest you, click on the "locations" link near the top of this page. PCTs do not do evaluations for diagnostic/compensation purposes, only – all evaluations are for treatment consideration. Evaluations for compensation purposes are handled through the Veterans Benefits Administration's Compensation & Pension process.
Veterans who are interested in PTSD treatment should ask their Primary Care provider for a referral to the nearest PCT.
